I'll never understand why movies still have black bars. I remember the switchover from 4:3 TVs to 16:9 TVs and thought cool, we can finally watch widescreen movies without black bars. But that never happened. They just made the movies even more widescreen with off the wall ratios even wider than 16:9.
I had no idea what "open matte" meant, but tried one out. First thing I noticed was, hey, it fills the entire screen! Finally a certain percentage of my expensive TV screen isn't going to waste. I wish more movies were released in open matte format. It feels like my screen is so much bigger and the overall experience is much better. We wouldn't accept this with video games or really any other sort of media, why do movies get a pass? I paid for 65" and I want to use all 65" and as far as I know, last time I checked, black bars are universally hated. It doesn't enhance the experience, it doesn't do anything positive that I can think of.
If I see open matte, I jump on it like a fly on a turd.
