The 50-year copyright laws have started to open up early 60s music for companies to dip into and, consequently, there have been a plethora of multi-disc compilations of tracks from the cusp of the 50s and 60s. This collection is one of the best, intelligently following the development of girl groups from doo-wop-rooted records through to the mega-selling pop-orientated hits of 1962/63.
Disc One covers 1955-60, taking in the R&B raunch of Etta James and Baby Washington, the schoolgirl Bobbettes, the clean and cutsy Chordettes and Poni-tails, through to the emergence of The Shirelles. Disc Two covers 1961/62, including rarer tracks from the pre-Ronettes Ronnie & The Relatives, The Charmaines and The Pearlettes.
As the girl group sensation gathered steam, production techniques also improved, as evidenced with Disc Three’s inclusion of some early Motown cuts (underrated early Marvelettes and Supremes tracks) and the Phil Spector-produced Crystals. Throughout, rarities rub shoulders with hits, illuminating how black R&B and white pop dovetailed into something that was meant to be throwaway, but has proved to be decidedly long-lasting.
